The government of St Kitts and Nevis has passed extensive legislation to attract financial services and businesses to the island. The Constitution provides for a federal entity consisting of two islands, Saint Kitt, one of the smallest islands in the Caribbean and the other the largest. Both federations consist of two islands, but Stitts, the larger of them, is roughly oval and has a long, narrow peninsula to the southeast.

Nevis, surrounded by coral reefs, is located in the middle of a channel known as Narrows, between the islands of St Kitts and Nevis and Saint Martin.

In March, the annual St Nevis Swim takes place, where brave swimmers take to the water on the beautiful shores of St Kitts to relax. After crossing Cockleshell Bay (2.5 miles) and a boat with supporters, participants will complete a 2 mile swim to Conaree Beach. Snorkelers will get to see a lot along the way, from the volcanic corals of half the island to the volcanoes and corals in the other half of Saint Kitty. The swim distance is 1,000 metres to finish at Cocklehell Beach in St Kitt's.

The British settled on St. Kitts (formerly St. Christopher) in 1623, and today St. Kitts and Nevis are the second and third largest islands respectively in the Caribbean. Originally called Liamuiga ("fertile land") by its inhabitants, the early settlers liked it because of its fertile land.

In 1967, it accepted the associated statehood, which ensured national self-government, while Britain retained responsibility for foreign policy and defence. This arrangement lasted until the end of World War II, when the Caribbean was split into two separate government entities, one comprising St Kitts and Nevis and the other comprising the British Virgin Islands and the island of Barbados.

Saint Kitts and Nevis and Anguilla established the presidency of the Federation of Wind Islands, which retained this status until 1956, but it was not until 1983 that the islands became fully independent. Both islands have international airports; Vance Amory International Airport is located in Nevis and Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport in St. Kitts. The deep-water port of Basseterre borders the Caribbean to the north, the Atlantic to the south and the Gulf of St. Lucia to the east.
